Whether it be a treasured heirloom or a cherished holiday tradition, we each have our own meaning for the word heritage. It is no different for the family of Terry Spears, who started in the mattress manufacturing business in the 1970s as his legacy is continued.
The family tradition in the mattress industry was established in the early 1900s when J.H. Sanford had his own company where he manufactured and sold mattresses. Sanford’s son, Claude worked at Lovell Mattress in Rome until he stepped out independently and opened Sanford Mattress in the 1940s. The company was a preferred provider for local colleges, boarding schools, and furniture stores. The legacy continued to the third generation, led by Sanford’s son-in-law, Terry Spears. In 1973, along with his brother, Spears Mattress was opened. The company quickly became the largest independent mattress manufacturer in the country. The successful business was then approached by a larger national company, which purchased the company in 2006 and later closed in 2014. After enjoying retirement for several years, in 2015, Spears decided to get back into the industry and opened Heritage Sleep Concepts. Now recognized as one of the fastest growing manufacturers in the country, the company is lead by the fourth and fifth generations. Jordan and Jamie Beck, who were trained by their grandfather continue the legacy into the future.
Located at 100 Capitoline Drive in Rome, Heritage Sleep Concepts manufactures mattresses that can be found throughout the southeast.
